Mount Elgon National Park is a protected area In the eastern Uganda and western Kenya. It is named after Mount Elgon and the park’s primary feature is a dormant stratovolcano. The park, which is 1,279 square kilometers in size, is renowned for its varied landscapes, abundant wildlife, and cultural history.
An old volcano called Mount Elgon, which rises to a height of 4,321 meters, is located in the middle of the national park. The mountain, which is the fourth-highest in East Africa, provides a variety of trekking and climbing options. Wagagai, the highest point in Uganda, is one of the mountain’s several summits. Beautiful crater lakes on Mount Elgon were created by previous volcanic activity. These lakes, which are dispersed across the park and provide stunning views and chances for birdwatching, include Lake Elgon and Lake Kwoera.
Numerous species of plants and animals can be found at Mount Elgon National Park. Its varied ecosystems include alpine regions, moorland, bamboo zones, and montane forests. Over 300 different bird species can be seen in the park, including the critically endangered Lammergeier and Jackson’s Francolin. Elephants, buffalo, hyenas, duikers, and numerous primates, such as blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys, are among the other animal species present in the park.

There are a variety of routes with varying durations and degrees of difficulty that go to many interesting locations, such as mountain tops, hot springs, and waterfalls. The routes leading to Sasa and Sipi Falls are well-liked by tourists. The Bagisu and Sabiny people, two indigenous populations who reside around Mount Elgon, have a rich cultural history. Visitors are welcome to learn about their customs, which include circumcision rituals, folk dances, and regional crafts.
The towns of Mbale in Uganda and Kitale in Kenya are both close to the park. Both expert hikers and novices can go there because there are a variety of trails and routes available for hikers of different skill levels.
